Formation:  Amethyst and smoky quartz are both varieties of quartz crystals, and they can naturally form together in a rock or mineral deposit. These two minerals have distinct colours due to different impurities present in their crystal structures.
Amethyst is typically purple or violet and gets its colour from traces of iron and aluminium. Smoky quartz, on the other hand, is brown to greyish-brown and gets its colour from natural radiation or the presence of aluminium impurities.
When they form together, it can create a striking contrast of colours, with the purple of the amethyst juxtaposed against the brown or greyish-brown of the smoky quartz. These combinations are known as "amethyst on smoky quartz" or "amethyst in smoky quartz."
The formation occurs as follows:
  1. Initial Quartz Growth: Quartz crystals begin to form in a mineral-rich solution. The specific colours of amethyst and smoky quartz develop due to the presence of certain impurities within the crystal lattice.
  2. Change in Conditions: During the growth process, there can be changes in the mineral composition of the surrounding environment or variations in temperature and pressure.
  3. Introduction of Iron and Aluminium: Iron and aluminium impurities may be introduced into the solution during these changes. If the concentration of iron and aluminium is sufficient, amethyst crystals will start to grow within the smoky quartz crystals. The difference in coloration between the two varieties is due to the varying amounts of these impurities.
  4. Layered Growth: The amethyst crystals grow as layers or inclusions within the smoky quartz crystals, creating the visually appealing contrast of colours.
  5. Final Crystal Formation: Over time, as conditions continue to change, the crystal growth may stop, resulting in the formation of amethyst within the smoky quartz. This can result in beautiful specimens that are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.
These unique specimens can be found in various geological settings, and they are treasured for their aesthetic appeal and the intriguing geological processes that led to their formation.
