The Campo del Cielo (“Field of Heaven”) meteorites come from one of the most important meteorite discoveries on Earth. Although officially documented by the Spanish in 1576, these iron masses were already well-known to Indigenous communities of the region. Over time, explorers uncovered fragments across the provinces of Chaco and Santiago del Estero, including some of the largest single meteorite pieces ever found—such as El Chaco and Gancedo. Today, over 100 tonnes of Campo del Cielo material have been recovered, making it one of the world’s most productive meteorite fields.

Around 4,000–5,000 years ago, a massive iron-nickel body entered Earth’s atmosphere and shattered, forming at least 26 craters across an 18.5 × 3 km field. Radiocarbon dating places the fall around 2200–2700 BCE, while the meteorite itself is approximately 4.5 billion years old—formed during the birth of the Solar System.

Campo del Cielo fragments are classified as IAB iron octahedrites and contain 92.9% iron, 6.7% nickel, and 0.4% cobalt, along with traces of iridium, gallium, germanium, and phosphorus. Their unusually high density of inclusions may have contributed to the spectacular breakup that scattered pieces across the region.
