The History of the Agoudal Meteorite

The Agoudal Meteorite was first discovered in 2000 when two small iron pieces were collected in the Agoudal area of Morocco's High Atlas Mountains. These unusual pieces were initially sold to tourists without their extraterrestrial origin being recognised. In September 2011, another specimen was sold to a dealer in the nearby town of Errich, who recognised it as an iron meteorite. This led to further searches and the recovery of many additional fragments. Agoudal was officially classified as an Iron, IIAB meteorite in 2013.

Agoudal is significant because it represents one of Morocco's officially recognised iron meteorites and has a substantial recorded mass of approximately 100 kg across the known material. Scientific examination has identified features including Neumann bands, schreibersite and troilite within studied specimens, providing valuable information about the meteorite's metallic structure and history.
