The History of the Agoudal Meteorite

The Agoudal Meteorite was first discovered in 2000 in the Agoudal area of Morocco's High Atlas Mountains. Two small pieces of iron were collected and sold to tourists, but their extraterrestrial origin was not recognised at the time. The story changed in September 2011 when another piece was sold to a dealer in Errich and identified as an iron meteorite. This led to systematic searches using metal detectors during 2012, resulting in the recovery of hundreds of additional fragments. The meteorite was officially classified as Iron, IIAB and approved in 2013.

The Agoudal Meteorite is particularly interesting because the recovered material consists predominantly of small, irregular fragments with thin weathering rinds, making naturally shaped pieces such as this especially appealing to collectors. The official Meteoritical Bulletin records a total recovered mass of more than 100 kg, with the largest recovered individual weighing 60 kg.

Agoudal's significance also comes from its place within the story of early Solar System material. As an IIAB iron meteorite, it preserves metallic material from an ancient parent body that underwent differentiation billions of years ago.
