The Story of the Agoudal Meteorite

The Agoudal meteorite is one of Morocco's best-known iron meteorites. The first pieces were collected in 2000 in the Agoudal area of the High Atlas Mountains, although their extraterrestrial origin was not recognised at the time. In September 2011, another piece was sold to a meteorite dealer who recognised it as an iron meteorite. This discovery led to systematic searching of the surrounding area using metal detectors, resulting in the recovery of hundreds of fragments.

The Meteoritical Bulletin officially classifies Agoudal as an Iron, IIAB meteorite. More than 100 kg of material has been recovered, with specimens ranging from tiny fragments to much larger masses. The largest reported individual weighed approximately 60 kg. Most of the recovered material consists of irregularly shaped pieces measuring around 2–5 cm, often displaying a thin weathering rind — characteristics that can be seen beautifully in this specimen.

As an iron meteorite, Agoudal represents material from an ancient extraterrestrial body that formed during the early history of our Solar System.
