The Story Behind Myanmar Amber

Myanmar amber, historically known as Burmese amber or burmite, is fossilised tree resin renowned for its warm colours and remarkable preservation of prehistoric life. The famous deposits of the Hukawng Valley in northern Myanmar formed approximately 99 million years ago, during the Cretaceous Period, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth and ancient tropical forests supported a remarkable diversity of life.

Originally produced by resin-secreting trees, the sticky resin could trap insects, spiders, plant fragments and other organic material. Over millions of years, burial and natural chemical changes transformed the resin into amber, sometimes preserving extraordinary details of organisms that lived during the age of the dinosaurs.

Myanmar amber is especially important to palaeontologists because it preserves an exceptionally diverse record of ancient life. Its fossil inclusions help scientists investigate prehistoric ecosystems, the evolution of insects and other organisms, and the relationships between ancient and modern species.

Today, Myanmar amber is prized by collectors for its natural beauty, geological age and connection to a world that existed nearly 100 million years ago. Each specimen offers a tangible link to Earth's distant past, preserving a small part of an ancient environment within fossilised tree resin.
