Rastellum carinatum thrived in warm, shallow Cretaceous seas approximately 100-66 million years ago, filtering nutrients from the tropical waters that once covered this region. These oysters met their end during the catastrophic K-Pg extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs, as massive environmental changes devastated marine ecosystems worldwide.
