The Story of the Agoudal Meteorite

The Agoudal iron meteorite is an officially recognised meteorite from the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco. The Meteoritical Bulletin records Agoudal as an Iron, IIAB meteorite, with a total known mass of more than 100 kg. It was officially approved as a meteorite in 2013.

The story of Agoudal is particularly interesting. Two small pieces of iron were collected in the Agoudal area in 2000 and sold to tourists. It was not until September 2011, when another piece was sold to a meteorite dealer in Errich, that its extraterrestrial origin was recognised. Subsequent searches using metal detectors led to the recovery of many additional fragments.

The recovered material is generally found as irregular pieces, often with a naturally weathered exterior. The largest reported individual weighed around 60 kg, while many of the recovered specimens are considerably smaller.
