The History of the Agoudal Meteorite

The Agoudal Meteorite was first recognised from material collected in 2000 in the Agoudal area of Morocco's High Atlas Mountains. Two small iron pieces were collected and sold to tourists before their extraterrestrial origin was understood. In September 2011, another piece was sold to a dealer in the nearby town of Errich, who recognised it as an iron meteorite. This discovery prompted further searches in the area and the recovery of many additional fragments. Agoudal was subsequently classified as an Iron, IIAB meteorite and officially approved in 2013.

The Agoudal Meteorite is significant because it is an officially recognised IIAB iron meteorite from Morocco, with approximately 100 kg of material recorded in the Meteoritical Bulletin. IIAB irons are believed to originate from the metallic cores or differentiated interiors of ancient asteroidal bodies, making specimens such as Agoudal valuable records of processes that took place during the early evolution of the Solar System.

Agoudal is also known under the commercial name Imilchil, but Agoudal is the official meteorite name.
