The Green River Formation is one of the world's most celebrated fossil deposits, renowned for preserving fish with exceptional clarity. During the Eocene Epoch, a network of large freshwater lakes covered this region. Fine carbonate mud settled gently to the lake floor, rapidly burying fish and protecting them from decay, allowing remarkable fossil preservation.

Knightia eocaena was the most common fish inhabiting these ancient lakes, swimming in large schools and forming an important part of the prehistoric food chain. Larger fish, crocodilians, turtles, birds, and early mammals depended upon Knightia as a food source, making it one of the key species for understanding Eocene freshwater ecosystems.

This specimen displays outstanding preservation with a clearly defined skull, vertebral column, ribs, fin rays, and tail.
