Discover an authentic Globidens mosasaur tooth fossil from Morocco, a fascinating relic of a specialised marine reptile that lived approximately 72–66 million years ago. Unlike the pointed teeth of many other mosasaurs, Globidens developed rounded, robust teeth adapted for crushing hard-shelled prey. This distinctive fossil offers a glimpse into the remarkable diversity of predators that inhabited prehistoric oceans shortly before the end-Cretaceous mass extinction.

The Story Behind the Mosasaur
Around 70 million years ago, mosasaurs were among the dominant predators of the world's oceans. These air-breathing marine reptiles were not dinosaurs, although they lived during the same geological period. Related to modern monitor lizards and snakes, they evolved streamlined bodies, powerful tails and paddle-like limbs that made them highly effective swimmers.
Globidens was particularly unusual. While many mosasaurs had sharp, pointed teeth for gripping or tearing prey, Globidens possessed rounded, bulbous teeth suited to crushing hard shells. Its specialised dentition suggests that it could feed on animals such as molluscs and other hard-shelled marine creatures, occupying a different feeding niche from many of its relatives.
These distinctive teeth provide an intriguing example of how ancient marine reptiles adapted to different food sources and reduced competition within complex Cretaceous marine ecosystems.
Morocco's Extraordinary Fossil Deposits
Today, Oued Zem lies inland in central Morocco, but during the Late Cretaceous this region formed part of a marine environment rich in prehistoric life. The area belongs to the Oulad Abdoun Basin, internationally known for its extensive phosphate deposits and remarkable fossil record.
Over millions of years, the remains of marine animals accumulated in sediments on the ancient seabed. Burial and fossilisation preserved teeth and bones within these phosphate-rich layers. Mining and scientific study have since revealed fossils from a diverse range of marine vertebrates, including mosasaurs, sharks and bony fish.
This specimen connects you with that ancient marine world and the geological processes that preserved its remains for millions of years.
