This genuine fish fossil from Kemmerer, Wyoming was discovered in a working quarry within the famous Green River Formation, one of the world’s most important fossil sites. Around 50 million years ago during the Eocene Epoch, this region was covered by vast freshwater lakes where fish thrived in calm, warm waters surrounded by lush subtropical landscapes.
When this fish died, it sank to the quiet lakebed and was rapidly buried in ultra-fine sediment. Low oxygen conditions prevented decay and disturbance, allowing delicate skeletal details to be preserved. Over millions of years, the sediment hardened into fine-grained limestone, the signature rock of the Green River Formation, known globally for preserving fossils with exceptional clarity.
These fossils are incredibly important in the fossil record because they provide one of the most detailed windows into ancient freshwater ecosystems.
