A Relic of the Eocene Thunder Beast – Megacerops (Brontotherium) Fossil Bone

Size: Approximately 39mm × 35mm × 68mm
Weight: 69 gram
This authentic fossil bone fragment comes from Megacerops, a massive prehistoric mammal once commonly known as Brontotherium, meaning “Thunder Beast.” Although the exact bone cannot be identified, the preserved structure clearly shows fossilised bone from one of the largest mammals to roam North America during the late Eocene Epoch. Megacerops belonged to the extinct family Brontotheriidae, distant relatives of modern horses and rhinoceroses. These enormous herbivores could weigh up to 2–3 tons and were famous for their distinctive paired, Y-shaped bony horns on the nose, likely used for display or combat between males. Megacerops disappeared around 34 million years ago, when major climate changes at the end of the Eocene reshaped ecosystems across the continent.

This specimen originates from the famous White River Badlands, one of the most important fossil regions in North America. The fossil-rich sediments of the Chadron Formation have produced extraordinary discoveries for more than 150 years, helping scientists understand the evolution of mammals after the age of dinosaurs. Fossils from this region represent a crucial chapter in Earth’s prehistoric story.
Owning a Megacerops fossil means holding a genuine piece of deep time — a relic from an ancient world where giant mammals once thundered across prehistoric landscapes. Add this remarkable fossil from the White River Badlands to your collection and preserve a piece of Earth’s ancient history. 🦴🌍
