Own an authentic Mosasaur tooth fossil attributed to an indeterminate species of Prognathodon, recovered from the renowned phosphate deposits of Khouribga in Morocco. The Oulad Abdoun Basin is one of the world's most important sources of Late Cretaceous marine fossils, preserving abundant evidence of the ancient ecosystems that once occupied this region.

This Mosasaur tooth fossil displays the robust construction associated with Prognathodon, a genus of powerful mosasaurs known for their substantial jaws and strong teeth. Its warm brown colouration and preserved enamel give the tooth an attractive natural appearance, while the surrounding mineralised material provides a visible connection to the ancient seabed in which it was preserved.

The History of the Mosasaur

Mosasaurs were large marine reptiles that became some of the dominant predators of the Late Cretaceous seas. Although they lived alongside dinosaurs, they were not dinosaurs themselves. Instead, mosasaurs belonged to the squamate reptiles, the wider group that includes modern monitor lizards and snakes.

Prognathodon was one of the more robust mosasaur genera. Its powerful jaws and sturdy teeth were well suited to capturing and processing a variety of prey, reflecting the diversity of feeding strategies that evolved among these highly successful marine reptiles.

During the Late Cretaceous, much of what is now Morocco was covered by a broad marine environment. The phosphate deposits of the Oulad Abdoun Basin accumulated within this ancient setting and have subsequently become famous for their remarkable abundance of marine vertebrate fossils, including mosasaurs, sharks, fish and other prehistoric animals.

The tooth has been professionally repaired and stabilised, a common conservation treatment for fossils recovered from Moroccan phosphate deposits. Such restoration helps protect fragile fossil material and preserve the specimen for long-term study and display while retaining its character as an authentic fossil.

A Relic from the Ancient Moroccan Seas

This Mosasaur tooth fossil offers a tangible connection to an ocean that existed more than 66 million years ago. Its robust form, preserved enamel and mineralised surrounding material provide an evocative reminder of the formidable reptiles that patrolled the Late Cretaceous seas.

The specimen would make an excellent addition to a collection of Mosasaur fossils, Moroccan fossils, Cretaceous marine reptiles or prehistoric predator remains. It is equally suited to educational displays and collectors interested in the extraordinary marine ecosystems of the final chapter of the Age of Dinosaurs.
