The Story Behind the Shark

Otodus obliquus was an extinct species of large predatory shark that swam through the oceans approximately 60–50 million years ago, during the Paleocene and Early Eocene epochs. These ancient seas were home to a remarkable variety of marine life, and Otodus obliquus was among the predators that helped shape these underwater ecosystems.

Its teeth are particularly distinctive, with broad, triangular crowns, smooth cutting edges and substantial roots. Unlike the serrated teeth of its famous descendant, Megalodon, Otodus obliquus typically had smooth-edged teeth, sometimes accompanied by small lateral cusplets on either side of the main crown. These smaller points helped distinguish its teeth from those of many other ancient sharks.

As a large marine predator, Otodus obliquus likely fed on fish and other marine animals. Although its exact diet and hunting behaviour cannot be reconstructed completely from its teeth alone, its robust tooth structure suggests it was well adapted to capturing and consuming prey. Like modern sharks, it continually produced replacement teeth throughout its life. When a tooth was shed, it could settle on the seabed and eventually become buried in sediment, preserving a small but remarkable piece of the animal's history.

Otodus obliquus is also important to the study of shark evolution. It belongs to an extinct lineage of large sharks associated with the evolutionary history of the later megatooth sharks, including the famous Megalodon (Otodus megalodon). Over millions of years, this lineage included forms with increasingly massive teeth, reflecting the changing marine environments and predator-prey relationships of ancient oceans.

Today, fossil teeth of Otodus obliquus offer collectors a tangible connection to a world that existed long before humans. Each tooth represents an animal that once hunted in prehistoric seas, survived in an environment very different from our own, and left behind a fossil that can endure for tens of millions of years.

Fossils of the Oulad Abdoun Basin

Near Khouribga in central Morocco, the Oulad Abdoun Basin contains extensive phosphate deposits formed from sediments laid down in an ancient sea. Millions of years ago, this marine environment supported a diverse range of life, including sharks, fish, marine reptiles and other creatures. Their remains accumulated on the seafloor, where teeth and bones could become buried and preserved within the sediments.

Over millions of years, geological changes transformed the region, and the ancient seabed eventually became dry land. Today, the basin's phosphate mines expose these fossil-rich marine deposits in an arid landscape, allowing collectors to discover shark teeth that have survived for tens of millions of years.
