🐚 Polished Ammonite Fossil from Tulear, Madagascar
This stunning and authentic Polished Ammonite Fossil from Tulear, Madagascar, is a mesmerizing piece of natural history, perfectly preserved for your collection. The fossil, which has been beautifully cut and polished, showcases the intricate, fractal-like patterns of the suture lines—the complex borders where the internal chamber walls (septa) met the outer shell. Its rich, variegated brown and cream coloration with flashes of subtle iridescence in the central whorl highlights the spectacular preservation. The fossil measures approximately 106mm×132mm (to the highest point) and 91mm (to the lowest point of the shell) and weighs 421grams.
Ammonites were an extinct group of marine invertebrate mollusks belonging to the subclass Ammonoidea, which is closely related to living cephalopods like the octopus, squid, and the modern nautilus. Their coiled, chambered shells are their most defining feature, and the complex suture pattern visible on this specimen is characteristic of the group. They were predatory animals that inhabited the world's oceans for hundreds of millions of years. The Ammonites first appeared during the Devonian period (about 400 million years ago) and flourished, becoming extremely diverse, throughout the Mesozoic Era (the Age of Dinosaurs). They finally met their end during the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) extinction event approximately 66 million years ago, the same catastrophe that wiped out the non-avian dinosaurs. Because they evolved rapidly, had wide geographic distribution, and went extinct during a well-defined event, their fossils are extremely important as index fossils—they are critical for biostratigraphy, helping geologists accurately date the rock layers in which they are found.
