This authentic Prognathodon Mosasaur tooth fossil is a tall, strongly tapered specimen with a broad base and gently curved profile. Its warm brown fossilised enamel displays abundant fine longitudinal texture, natural colour variation and numerous preserved growth features across the surface. The pale fossilised root and remnants of surrounding matrix contrast beautifully with the darker crown, giving this tooth a distinctly natural appearance. Measuring approximately 47 mm in length, it is an impressive example of the robust dentition associated with these powerful Late Cretaceous marine reptiles.

The Mosasaur – Masters of the Cretaceous Seas
Mosasaurs were large, fully marine reptiles that became dominant predators in the world's oceans during the Late Cretaceous. Although they lived alongside the dinosaurs, mosasaurs were not dinosaurs themselves. They belonged to the squamate lineage, making them distant relatives of modern monitor lizards and snakes.
Mosasaurs lived primarily during the latter part of the Cretaceous, with some of the most successful species flourishing between approximately 100 and 66 million years ago. They were active predators that fed on fish, ammonites, marine reptiles and other marine animals. Their powerful jaws and continuously replaced teeth allowed them to capture and process a wide range of prey.
Several different types of mosasaur inhabited the ancient oceans. Mosasaurus became one of the largest and most famous members of the group, while Prognathodon developed robust jaws and substantial teeth. Other notable genera include Tylosaurus, known for its elongated snout, Platecarpus, a more streamlined form, and Globidens, which possessed rounded teeth adapted for crushing hard-shelled prey.
The mosasaurs disappeared approximately 66 million years ago during the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous Period. The asteroid impact that created the Chicxulub crater caused profound environmental changes, disrupting climates and food chains around the world. As marine ecosystems were severely affected, mosasaurs and many other successful groups failed to survive this global extinction event.
Repair and Conservation
This authentic Prognathodon Mosasaur tooth fossil has been professionally repaired and stabilised. Complete fossil teeth are difficult to recover because they can fracture during burial, fossilisation, geological pressure and excavation. Restoration helps stabilise the specimen while preserving its authentic fossil character.
This Prognathodon Mosasaur tooth fossil offers collectors a tangible connection to the ancient oceans of Morocco and to a formidable predator that disappeared at the end of the Cretaceous. Its tall profile, detailed enamel surface and natural matrix remnants make it an impressive addition to a collection of prehistoric marine life.
