The Mosasaur – Masters of the Cretaceous Seas
Mosasaurs were large marine reptiles that became some of the dominant predators of the world's oceans during the Late Cretaceous. Although they lived alongside dinosaurs, they were not dinosaurs themselves, but members of the squamate lineage that also includes modern lizards and snakes. Their streamlined bodies, powerful tails and formidable jaws made them highly effective marine hunters.
Mosasaurs lived in the oceans from roughly 100 to 66 million years ago, with their greatest diversity occurring during the Late Cretaceous. They preyed on a wide variety of marine animals, including fish, ammonites, marine reptiles and other creatures living in the ancient seas. Different species evolved specialised teeth and jaws suited to their particular feeding strategies.
Among the best-known mosasaurs were Mosasaurus, Tylosaurus, Platecarpus, Globidens and Prognathodon. Prognathodon was distinguished by its particularly robust jaws and substantial teeth, with some species possessing dentition capable of handling tough prey. These powerful reptiles occupied an important position near the top of Late Cretaceous marine food webs.
Their reign ended around 66 million years ago during the mass extinction at the close of the Cretaceous Period. The Chicxulub asteroid impact caused enormous environmental upheaval, disrupting climate and marine food chains on a global scale. Mosasaurs were among the many successful marine groups that disappeared during this catastrophic extinction event.
Repair and Conservation
This Prognathodon Mosasaur tooth fossil has been professionally repaired and stabilised. Complete teeth are difficult to recover because fossil material can fracture during burial, geological pressure and excavation. Restoration helps stabilise the specimen while preserving its authentic fossil character.
With its distinctive shape, natural brown coloration and Late Cretaceous origin, this Mosasaur tooth fossil makes an impressive addition to a collection of prehistoric life. It offers a tangible connection to the ancient marine ecosystems that existed long before humans appeared.
