The Story Behind the Fossil

Trilobites were marine arthropods that lived in Earth's oceans for more than 250 million years. Their bodies were divided into three main sections — the cephalon, thorax and pygidium — with the thorax consisting of multiple segments that allowed flexibility and movement.

This specimen comes from the Upper Ordovician Ktaoua Group of Jebel Tiskouine in Morocco, representing marine life from approximately 445 million years ago. During this period, the region was part of an ancient marine environment inhabited by a diverse range of organisms, including numerous species of trilobites.

The preservation of the individual body segments makes specimens such as this particularly interesting for collectors. The fossil provides a remarkable physical connection to an ancient seafloor ecosystem that existed hundreds of millions of years before the dinosaurs appeared.

A Fascinating Piece of Deep Time

With its elongated form, pronounced segmentation and Moroccan provenance, this Calymene Trilobite Fossil is a distinctive addition to a fossil collection. Display it as a conversation piece or alongside other trilobites to explore the remarkable diversity of these ancient marine arthropods.
