The nickel-iron composition of this Campo del Cielo meteorite is what sets it apart from every terrestrial rock you've ever held. As an IAB iron meteorite, it is composed primarily of iron and nickel — the same metallic alloy found at Earth's own core — forged deep inside a long-lost asteroid billions of years ago. When that asteroid was destroyed, these fragments were sent on a journey across the solar system that eventually ended in the Gran Chaco region of Argentina between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago.

The scale of that fall is staggering: with a total known weight exceeding 100 tons across all recovered specimens, Campo del Cielo is one of the largest meteorite falls ever recorded. Indigenous peoples of the Gran Chaco recognised the significance of these metallic stones long before modern science, naming the region "Campo del Cielo" — Field of the Sky. Spanish explorers documented the site in 1576, cementing its place in both scientific and human history.
