When Spanish explorers documented the site in 1576, it became one of the earliest recorded meteorite discoveries in the Western world. Since then, scientists have recovered specimens with a total known weight exceeding 100 tons, making this one of the largest meteorite falls on record. Each piece is classified as an IAB iron meteorite — composed primarily of iron and nickel, forged deep inside a long-lost asteroid before being blasted into space and eventually drawn to Earth.
