This captivating Pink Fluorite from Steinkopf is an impressive 340-gram specimen distinguished by its soft pastel-pink to peach coloration and broad, sculptural form. Large areas of translucent fluorite allow light to pass through the material, revealing subtle variations in tone and internal structure. Across the upper surface, overlapping crystal growth creates a series of stepped geometric forms, while prominent cleavage surfaces add definition and texture to the specimen.

The Steinkopf area lies within the remarkable Orange River Pegmatite Belt, a major geological province of Namaqualand containing thousands of pegmatites formed during the Mesoproterozoic, approximately one billion years ago. These highly evolved pegmatites are renowned for their complex mineralogy and have produced an exceptional variety of minerals.

Fluorite is specifically documented from pegmatites in the Steinkopf region, including the Norabees I pegmatite within the Norrabees pegmatite field, where it occurs in association with quartz and a diverse assemblage of pegmatite minerals. The region's complex magmatic-hydrothermal history contributed to the formation and alteration of these mineral-rich bodies.

The most striking characteristic of this specimen is its delicate pink coloration. Unlike the intensely saturated colours seen in some fluorites, this piece has a gentle, almost pastel appearance that extends across much of the specimen. Subtle peach and blush variations become apparent as the viewing angle changes, while areas of greater translucency provide additional depth.

The upper surface is particularly interesting, with broad fluorite growth rising into a low, irregular crystalline landscape. Distinct geometric faces and cleavage planes can be followed across the specimen, revealing successive stages of crystal growth and producing a naturally sculptural appearance. The reverse and side views also show how the fluorite forms a substantial interconnected mass rather than simply presenting as a collection of isolated crystals.

At 340 grams, this is a notably substantial specimen with excellent presence in a mineral cabinet. Its combination of size, unusual pastel colouring and strong natural crystal structure makes it an appealing choice for collectors who appreciate distinctive fluorite specimens beyond the more familiar purple and green varieties.

Fluorite has a Mohs hardness of approximately 4 and possesses perfect octahedral cleavage, so this specimen should be handled with care and protected from knocks and abrasion.

Make this substantial pink Steinkopf fluorite a focal point in your collection — its soft colour, translucent depth and sculptural crystal architecture offer a wonderfully distinctive expression of South African mineral heritage.
