This small Colpocoryphe grandis trilobite is preserved on a substantial Moroccan stone plate, with the articulated body clearly visible against the surrounding matrix. Its compact calymenid form and detailed segmentation make this an appealing addition for collectors interested in Moroccan Ordovician fossils.

The Story Behind the Fossil

Trilobites were ancient marine arthropods that lived in Earth's oceans for more than 250 million years. They were especially diverse during the Palaeozoic Era, and their segmented exoskeletons make them among the most recognisable fossils for collectors.

Colpocoryphe grandis belongs to the family Calymenidae, a group of trilobites characterised by their strongly segmented bodies and ability to enrol for protection. Moroccan specimens are particularly associated with the Ordovician rocks of the Anti-Atlas, where C. grandis occurs alongside other trilobite species.

The Ktaoua Formation around the Alnif region is an important source of Moroccan Ordovician trilobites. Research on the Lower Ktaoua Formation records Colpocoryphe grandis as commercially exploited from fossiliferous beds in the Jbel Tiskaouine area.
