This authentic fossil bone fragment comes from Megacerops, a giant prehistoric mammal once widely known as Brontotherium, meaning “Thunder Beast.” While this specimen represents a portion of an unidentified bone, its preserved fossilised structure and distinctive texture clearly show the dense remains of a large ancient mammal that roamed North America millions of years ago.
Megacerops belonged to the extinct family Brontotheriidae, a group of massive herbivores known as titanotheres. These animals were distant relatives of modern horses, rhinos, and tapirs. Living during the Eocene Epoch between about 54 and 34 million years ago, Megacerops grew to enormous sizes, comparable to a modern rhinoceros and weighing several tons. One of its most distinctive features was a pair of unusual forked, Y-shaped horns on its nose — bony structures believed to have been used for display or combat between rival males. The species eventually disappeared around 34 million years ago, when dramatic global climate changes at the end of the Eocene reshaped ecosystems across the planet.
This fossil was discovered in the renowned White River Badlands of South Dakota, one of the most important fossil regions in North America. For more than 150 years, the sedimentary layers of this region have produced remarkable fossil discoveries that have helped scientists understand how mammals evolved and diversified after the extinction of the dinosaurs. Fossils from the White River Badlands continue to provide vital insight into prehistoric ecosystems and the rise of large land mammals.
Even though this specimen represents only a fragment of a larger bone, it preserves a genuine piece of deep time — a relic from an ancient world where giant mammals once dominated the landscape.
Add this authentic Megacerops fossil from the legendary White River Badlands to your collection and own a remarkable fragment of Earth’s prehistoric past.
