This authentic fossil bone fragment comes from Megacerops, a massive prehistoric mammal once widely known as Brontotherium, meaning “Thunder Beast.” This specimen represents a section of an unidentified bone and shows the distinctive mineralised texture and structure typical of fossilised mammal bone. The elongated form and preserved surface detail provide a fascinating glimpse into the remains of one of North America’s great prehistoric mammals.
Megacerops belonged to the extinct family Brontotheriidae, commonly called titanotheres. These enormous plant-eating mammals lived during the Eocene Epoch (about 54–34 million years ago) and were distant relatives of modern horses, rhinos, and tapirs. Adult Megacerops could grow to the size of a rhinoceros and weigh several tons. What made them truly distinctive was their pair of large, forked, Y-shaped horns on the nose — unusual bony structures that were likely used in displays of dominance or in battles between rival males. Despite their success, these giants disappeared around 34 million years ago when dramatic global climate changes reshaped ecosystems at the end of the Eocene.
This fossil was discovered in the famous White River Badlands, one of the most important fossil localities in North America. For more than a century, fossils from this region have helped scientists reconstruct ancient ecosystems and understand the rise of mammals after the extinction of the dinosaurs. The fossil-rich sediments of the White River Badlands continue to yield extraordinary discoveries and remain a cornerstone of North American palaeontology.
Even as a fragment of a larger bone, this specimen represents a genuine piece of deep geological time — a relic from an era when giant mammals roamed prehistoric landscapes.
Add this authentic Megacerops fossil to your collection and own a remarkable fragment of the ancient world preserved in the legendary White River Badlands.
