The Story Behind the Specimen

Goshenite is the colourless variety of beryl, the same mineral species that produces well-known gemstones such as emerald, aquamarine and heliodor. In Goshenite, the absence of strong colour-producing elements allows the distinctive hexagonal crystal structure of beryl to take centre stage.

The Erongo Mountains of Namibia are renowned for their granite-hosted miarolitic pegmatites. During the final stages of crystallisation, mineral-rich fluids became concentrated in cavities within these pegmatites. These open spaces provided room for crystals to grow freely, allowing beryl to develop its characteristic hexagonal-prismatic forms. Goshenite is a documented variety of beryl from the Erongo Volcanic Complex, alongside aquamarine, heliodor and green beryl.

Erongo is also celebrated among mineral collectors for its remarkable diversity of pegmatite minerals, including schorl tourmaline, topaz, fluorite and beryl. The Erongo Granite formed during the Early Cretaceous, approximately 130 million years ago, creating the geological environment in which these mineral-rich crystal pockets developed.
