The Story Behind the Specimen

Goshenite is the colourless variety of beryl, the same mineral species that produces famous gemstones such as emerald and aquamarine. Without the trace elements responsible for the stronger colours found in other beryl varieties, goshenite allows the distinctive hexagonal crystal structure of beryl to take centre stage.

The Erongo Mountains of Namibia are renowned for their mineral-rich granite-hosted miarolitic pegmatites. During the final stages of crystallisation, mineral-rich fluids became concentrated within cavities in these pegmatites. These open spaces provided room for crystals to grow freely, producing the well-developed prismatic forms for which Erongo specimens are known.

Erongo is a particularly significant locality for beryl, with documented occurrences of goshenite, aquamarine, heliodor and green beryl. The region is also famous among mineral collectors for exceptional specimens of schorl tourmaline, topaz, fluorite and other pegmatite minerals. The Erongo Granite formed during the Early Cretaceous, approximately 130 million years ago, placing the formation of this mineral environment deep within Namibia's geological past.
