The Story Behind the Specimen

Goshenite is the colourless variety of beryl, the same mineral family that includes famous gemstones such as aquamarine, heliodor and emerald. While beryl is often prized for its colour, goshenite reveals the natural crystal structure of the mineral without the strong colouring produced by certain trace elements.

The Erongo Mountains are one of Namibia's renowned mineral localities. Their granite-hosted pegmatites contain cavities known as miaroles, where mineral-rich fluids became concentrated during the final stages of crystallisation. These open spaces provided room for crystals to grow freely, producing the well-formed prismatic minerals for which Erongo is famous. Scientific studies specifically document colourless goshenite from the Erongo Volcanic Complex, alongside aquamarine, heliodor and green beryl.

Erongo beryl commonly develops strong hexagonal-prismatic crystals, and the locality is also known for associations with minerals including schorl tourmaline, quartz, feldspar, muscovite and iron oxides. The Erongo Granite formed during the Early Cretaceous, approximately 132–130 million years ago, making these crystals a beautiful connection to a very different chapter in Namibia's geological history.
