This Moroccan fossil plate preserves two Flexicalymene ouzregui trilobites, including a larger, well-defined specimen and a much smaller associated trilobite. The larger fossil displays the characteristic segmented body of this Upper Ordovician calymenid trilobite, while the surrounding sediment provides an authentic geological setting for the specimens.

Flexicalymene ouzregui is one of the characteristic Moroccan Ordovician trilobites associated with the Ktaoua Formation of the Anti-Atlas. Specimens attributed to Jbel Tiskaouine near Alnif are particularly well known in the fossil trade.

The Story Behind the Fossil

Trilobites were marine arthropods that lived throughout the Palaeozoic Era, appearing more than 500 million years ago and surviving for over 250 million years. Their segmented exoskeletons provide an exceptional record of ancient marine ecosystems.

Flexicalymene ouzregui belongs to the family Calymenidae and is an Upper Ordovician trilobite known from Morocco. The species has been recorded from the Ktaoua Formation, and specimens from the Jbel Tiskaouine area near Alnif are particularly well represented in the fossil trade.

Around 450 million years ago, the Anti-Atlas region of Morocco formed part of a marine environment. Sediments deposited on the ancient seafloor eventually buried and preserved trilobite remains, producing the fossil-bearing Ordovician rocks that are now exposed in the region around Alnif and Jbel Tiskaouine. Jbel Tiskaouine is recognised as an important Upper Ordovician trilobite locality, with Flexicalymene and Colpocoryphe among the genera found there.
