This Paleocene to Early Eocene Otodus obliquus tooth is a characterful Moroccan fossil with a broad crown and substantial root typical of this early megatooth shark. Its warm fossil tones and naturally weathered surface give it an authentic geological appearance, while the compact dimensions make it easy to display. The specimen originated in the Oulad Abdoun Basin near Khouribga, one of Morocco's most important fossil-producing areas. The tooth has been repaired, and that repair is clearly noted below. For collectors, its appeal lies not only in its form but also in the evolutionary story it represents, reaching back to a time long before the appearance of Megalodon.

The History of Otodus Obliquus

The Moroccan phosphate deposits of the Oulad Abdoun Basin near Khouribga are among the best-known sources of Paleogene shark fossils. Otodus obliquus is one of the characteristic sharks found there, and teeth from these deposits provide a tangible record of marine ecosystems that flourished after the end-Cretaceous extinction.

O. obliquus is significant to collectors because it sits near the beginning of the evolutionary story of the megatooth sharks, the lineage that later included Megalodon. Its teeth typically feature a substantial triangular crown, a strong root and smooth edges, sometimes accompanied by small side cusplets.

Fossil evidence suggests that this was a large predator, with some individuals estimated at roughly 9–10 metres long. Over later stages of megatooth evolution, tooth morphology became more robust and serrated, eventually leading toward the iconic Megalodon tooth. This specimen therefore represents an important chapter in a much longer evolutionary story.

Secure this distinctive Otodus obliquus tooth as a tangible link to the ancient seas of Morocco. It is an engaging collector's piece and a memorable gift for anyone fascinated by shark evolution and the story behind Megalodon.
