This authentic Campo del Cielo meteorite is a fascinating 15-gram iron meteorite with an exceptionally characterful natural form. Its elongated, asymmetrical shape is defined by rounded metallic ridges, recessed areas and layered-looking contours that give the specimen a striking sculptural appearance. Darker weathered markings contrast beautifully with the silvery-grey metallic surface, while the many folds and cavities reveal a complex texture that changes noticeably from one viewing angle to the next. Compact yet visually detailed, this is an appealing specimen for collectors who value the individuality of naturally occurring meteorite fragments.

The Campo del Cielo meteorite is one of the most historically important meteorite discoveries on Earth. These iron meteorites fell between approximately 4,000 and 5,000 years ago in the Gran Chaco region of northern Argentina, creating a vast strewn field containing numerous individual fragments and impact features.

Indigenous communities knew of the unusual iron masses long before their significance was understood by modern science. The name Campo del Cielo, meaning “Field of the Sky,” reflects the extraordinary origin of these stones. Spanish explorers formally documented the meteorite site in 1576, giving Campo del Cielo a remarkably long history of human observation and documentation.

Campo del Cielo is particularly important to meteorite collectors because of its exceptional provenance, enormous total recovered mass, and classification as an IAB iron meteorite. Formed approximately 4.5 billion years ago from material associated with an ancient differentiated asteroid, these meteorites preserve a physical record of the processes that shaped the early Solar System. Owning an individual fragment therefore means possessing a piece of material that predates Earth itself.

Some meteorites stand out for their size; others stand out for their character. This Campo del Cielo specimen belongs to the latter. If you appreciate meteorites with unusual natural forms and intricate surfaces, make this individual fragment part of your collection and enjoy a tangible connection to material that originated beyond Earth.
