Discover an impressive example of nature's remarkable preservation with this large Petrified Wood Branch. Its distinctive upright shape retains the appearance of an ancient tree trunk, with a naturally textured exterior displaying delicate shades of cream, beige and soft honey. The polished top reveals a fascinating cross-section of the original wood, featuring intricate radial patterns, branching mineral-filled fractures and subtle earthy brown inclusions. Its predominantly pale colour palette gives this specimen a different character from the darker varieties of petrified wood, while the preserved surface details provide a wonderful glimpse into the structure of an ancient tree transformed into stone over millions of years. A beautiful statement piece for a fossil collection or natural history display.

How Did Madagascar's Petrified Wood Form?
Around 220 million years ago, during the Late Triassic Period, parts of what is now northern Madagascar supported ancient forests. Over time, fallen trees and branches became buried beneath layers of sediment, protecting the wood from complete decomposition.
As groundwater moved through the surrounding sediments, it carried dissolved minerals into the buried wood. Silica-rich mineral solutions gradually filled the tiny spaces within the wood and, over time, helped preserve or replace its original cellular structure. Through this remarkable process, the organic material was transformed into stone while retaining many of the features of the original tree.
Over millions of years, the surrounding geological deposits hardened and the fossilised wood remained preserved underground. Weathering and erosion eventually exposed these ancient remains, allowing them to be recovered and prepared as the beautiful specimens we can appreciate today.
What was once living wood became a lasting record of an ancient forest, preserving details of a world that existed long before humans.
Why Collect Petrified Wood from Madagascar?
Madagascar's Triassic petrified wood offers collectors a fascinating connection to a period in Earth's history approximately 220 million years ago.
Unlike ordinary mineral specimens, petrified wood preserves the structure of something that was once alive. Its patterns, grain and textures are reminders of the original tree, while the mineralisation process has transformed its organic structure into stone.
Each specimen has its own natural character. Variations in mineral composition and preservation create distinctive colours, patterns and textures, making every piece different. Polished surfaces can reveal fascinating details that might otherwise remain hidden within the fossil.
For fossil collectors, petrified wood offers an opportunity to own a piece of ancient botanical history. It also makes an attractive display specimen and provides an interesting way to introduce geology, fossilisation and prehistoric plant life into a collection.
Bring a remarkable piece of prehistoric botanical history into your collection. With its impressive weight, distinctive tree-trunk shape and beautifully detailed polished cross-section, this Madagascar Petrified Wood Stump makes a wonderful display specimen and a lasting reminder of the extraordinary processes that preserve Earth's ancient natural history.
