This Lattice Quartz with Foitite Cluster is an attractive specimen from the Erongo Mountains of Namibia, featuring broad, softly translucent quartz crystals arranged in a complex interlocking structure. The specimen has a particularly interesting three-dimensional form, with larger milky quartz crystals projecting from the main body and numerous smaller, clearer crystals filling the spaces between them. Darker Foitite-rich mineralisation provides subtle contrast throughout the quartz framework.

The Erongo Mountains are one of Namibia's best-known mineral-producing regions, particularly celebrated for unusual quartz formations and mineral associations developed within its granite-related pegmatites and miarolitic cavities. The geological environment of Erongo has produced a remarkable variety of specimens prized by mineral collectors.

Lattice Quartz, also known as Gitter Quartz, is among the more distinctive quartz forms associated with the region. Instead of developing as a simple collection of separate points, the quartz grows in an intricate interlocking arrangement, producing a framework of intersecting crystals. The result can resemble a natural lattice, with individual crystals contributing to a larger three-dimensional structure.

This specimen displays that characteristic growth particularly well. Several substantial, milky quartz crystals form the principal structure, while smaller quartz crystals occupy the spaces around and between them. Some of the smaller crystals are noticeably clearer than the larger surrounding crystals, creating subtle changes in transparency and surface texture across the specimen.

The Foitite-rich mineralisation adds another interesting dimension. Dark grey to brown material occurs in concentrated areas between the quartz crystals, particularly around some of the central and lower portions of the specimen. These darker areas help define the individual quartz crystals and provide a natural contrast against the predominantly pale colour of the specimen.

Viewed from different directions, the specimen reveals remarkably different aspects of its growth. One face emphasises the larger, softly rounded quartz crystals, while other angles expose deeper pockets filled with smaller crystals and darker mineralisation. This changing appearance is an important part of the appeal of Lattice Quartz, as the internal structure becomes increasingly apparent when the specimen is examined from different viewpoints.

The specimen measures 84 × 65 × 41 mm and weighs 167 grams, giving it a substantial presence while remaining compact enough for a mineral cabinet or display shelf. It has been professionally cleaned and retains a natural flat base, allowing it to stand securely without requiring a separate stand.

Quartz has a Mohs hardness of approximately 7, but the numerous projecting crystals and intricate intergrowths can be vulnerable to impact. Handle carefully and avoid dropping, knocking or abrasive cleaning.

A fascinating example of Erongo's distinctive quartz formations, this specimen brings together broad milky crystals, intricate lattice growth and contrasting Foitite-rich mineralisation. Its natural flat base and changing views make it an engaging piece to explore and display.
