A Relic of the Eocene Thunder Beast – Megacerops (Brontotherium) Fossil Bone

This genuine fossil bone fragment comes from Megacerops, a massive prehistoric mammal once commonly referred to as Brontotherium, meaning “Thunder Beast.” While the exact bone cannot be identified, the fossil preserves the dense internal structure and natural texture typical of large fossilised mammal bone, offering a tangible connection to one of the most impressive mammals of the Eocene Epoch.
Megacerops belonged to the extinct family Brontotheriidae, a group of giant herbivores known as titanotheres. These animals were distant relatives of modern horses, rhinos and tapirs, yet they possessed their own unique features. Adult Megacerops could weigh several tons and are best known for their unusual paired, forked horns on the nose — bony structures thought to have been used in dominance displays or battles between males. These impressive mammals thrived across North America during the late Eocene but disappeared around 34 million years ago as dramatic climate shifts transformed their environment.

This specimen originates from the world-famous White River Badlands in South Dakota. For more than a century, this remarkable fossil region has produced some of the most important mammal fossils in North America. The sediments here preserve an extraordinary record of prehistoric life and have played a vital role in helping scientists understand how mammals evolved after the extinction of the dinosaurs.
Even as a fragment from an unknown bone, this fossil represents a genuine piece of deep time — a relic from an ancient world where giant mammals roamed prehistoric plains.
Add this authentic Megacerops fossil from the White River Badlands to your collection and own a remarkable piece of North America’s ancient past.
