The Mosasaur – Apex Predators of the Cretaceous Oceans

Mosasaurs were large marine reptiles that flourished throughout the Late Cretaceous, becoming some of the dominant predators in ancient marine ecosystems. Although they lived during the age of dinosaurs, mosasaurs were not dinosaurs. They belonged to the squamate reptile group and were more closely related to modern monitor lizards and snakes.

Their powerful jaws were equipped with rows of replacement teeth designed primarily for gripping prey. As individual teeth were lost or worn, new teeth developed within the jaws, meaning isolated mosasaur teeth are among the more commonly encountered remains of these impressive marine reptiles.

The shape and proportions of mosasaur teeth varied according to species and their position within the jaws.
