A Window Into Ancient Herds — Oreodont Jaw Fossil with Teeth

Species: Merycoidodon culbertsoni
Age: Oligocene (32 Million Years)
Location: Niobrara County, Wyoming
Formation: White River Formation
Size: Approximately 52mm × 46mm × 33mm
Weight: 60gram
This fascinating fossil is a preserved section of jawbone with several well-defined teeth from Merycoidodon, one of the most common prehistoric mammals of ancient North America. The specimen displays a portion of the lower jaw with beautifully preserved molars and premolars. The raised ridges and cusps on the teeth are still clearly visible, revealing the powerful grinding surfaces these animals used to process vegetation. Even as a partial jaw, this fossil offers an exceptional look at the feeding anatomy of a long-extinct mammal.
Oreodonts belonged to the extinct family Merycoidodontidae, a unique group of even-toed hoofed mammals that lived from the late Eocene through the Miocene, roughly 40 to 5 million years ago. Although they somewhat resembled pigs or sheep, oreodonts were actually a distinct evolutionary group with no exact modern equivalent. Merycoidodon was one of the best-known species and likely lived in large herds roaming open plains and woodland environments. Their strong jaws and complex teeth allowed them to graze and browse a wide variety of plants. These mammals eventually disappeared around 5 million years ago, as changing climates and evolving grassland ecosystems reshaped the animal communities of North America.

This fossil was discovered in the famous White River Formation of Niobrara County, Wyoming, one of the most important fossil-bearing formations in North America. For more than a century, fossils from the White River Formation have helped scientists reconstruct ancient ecosystems and understand how mammals diversified after the extinction of the dinosaurs. The region has produced countless important discoveries including oreodonts, early horses, rhinoceroses, carnivores, and other prehistoric mammals.
With its clearly preserved teeth and jaw structure, this specimen provides an authentic and educational connection to the rich mammal life that once inhabited the prehistoric plains of North America.
Add this remarkable Oreodont jaw fossil to your collection and own a genuine relic from one of the most important fossil formations in the world.
