🌳 A Tree Turned to Stone — Nature’s Ancient Time Capsule
Age: Late Triassic Period, approximately 220 million years ago
Location: Ambilobe Region, Northern Madagascar
Polished Face Size / Height: 81mm x 50mm x 38mm (approximately)
Weight: 280 gram
This beautiful small petrified wood branch from Ambilobe, Madagascar is a remarkable fossilised remnant of an ancient forest, preserved in extraordinary detail. One end has been carefully polished to reveal the intricate internal structure of the original wood — growth rings, mineral patterns, and natural colour variations ranging from warm creams and browns to subtle earthy tones. The outer surface retains its natural texture, creating a striking contrast between raw fossil and polished stone.
This specimen was discovered in the Ambilobe region of northern Madagascar, an area world-famous for its richly preserved fossil wood deposits. Millions of years ago, trees growing in this ancient landscape were buried rapidly by sediment, often associated with volcanic activity and mineral-rich groundwater. Over immense spans of time, the organic wood slowly decomposed and was replaced cell by cell with silica and other minerals in a process called permineralisation. The result is petrified wood — stone that perfectly preserves the structure of the original tree.
Today, this fossil rests within sedimentary host rock formed from ancient floodplains and volcanic deposits that helped protect the wood during fossilisation. Petrified wood plays an important role in the fossil record because it provides direct evidence of prehistoric forests, climate conditions, and plant evolution. By studying these specimens, scientists can reconstruct ancient ecosystems and understand how Earth’s environments have changed over millions of years.
Whether displayed as a natural conversation piece, a collector’s specimen, or a tangible link to Earth’s deep past, this polished petrified wood branch is a captivating fragment of geological history.
Bring home a piece of Madagascar’s ancient forest — add this stunning fossil to your collection today.
