This Mosasaur tooth fossil is a broad, robust specimen with a distinctive tapered crown and gently rounded apex. Its fossilised enamel displays attractive warm brown and honey tones, with fine longitudinal striations running across much of the crown. The surface also preserves extensive natural cracking, subtle colour variation and areas of contrasting mineralisation, giving the tooth an authentic and characterful fossil appearance.

The broad triangular profile is particularly appealing in this specimen, with the crown gradually widening towards the base. Several areas of lighter mineralised material remain around the basal portion, contrasting beautifully with the darker brown enamel. The tooth has a substantial appearance despite its relatively compact size and displays well from multiple angles.

The Mosasaur – Predators of the Cretaceous Seas

Mosasaurs were formidable marine reptiles that inhabited the world's oceans during the Late Cretaceous. Although they lived alongside dinosaurs, mosasaurs were not dinosaurs; they were squamate reptiles related to modern monitor lizards and snakes.

Their streamlined bodies and powerful jaws made them highly successful marine predators. Their mouths contained numerous conical teeth adapted for grasping and holding prey, while replacement teeth developed continuously within the jaws. This continual replacement is one reason isolated mosasaur teeth are among the most recognisable fossils associated with these ancient marine reptiles.

Different mosasaur species and different positions within the jaws produced teeth with varying proportions and shapes. Broad, substantial teeth such as this one reflect the remarkable diversity found among mosasaur dentition. The preserved longitudinal texture across the crown provides an especially interesting feature for collectors to examine.

Mosasaurs remained successful until the end-Cretaceous extinction event approximately 66 million years ago. Their disappearance brought an end to a remarkable lineage of marine reptiles that had dominated marine ecosystems during the latter part of the Cretaceous.

Preservation and Natural Character

This Mosasaur tooth fossil retains considerable surface detail across the crown, including fine enamel striations, natural fissures, tonal variation and areas of mineralised material. The contrasting darker upper enamel and lighter basal region create an attractive two-tone appearance.

The specimen has been repaired and stabilised, as is common with fossil teeth that have experienced fracturing and mineral alteration during burial, recovery and preparation. The restoration does not detract from the overall character of the tooth, while the extensive surviving enamel detail provides an excellent view of its original form.

At approximately 38 mm in length, this Mosasaur tooth fossil is an appealing display specimen for collectors interested in mosasaurs, marine reptiles and the prehistoric ecosystems of the Late Cretaceous. Its broad crown, warm brown coloration and naturally varied preservation make it a distinctive addition to a fossil collection.

A fascinating survivor from an ancient marine ecosystem, this authentic Mosasaur tooth fossil offers a tangible connection to one of the great predatory reptiles of the Cretaceous seas.
