The History of Otodus Obliquus

Otodus obliquus lived at a fascinating point in shark evolution, during the Paleocene to Early Eocene, when marine ecosystems were changing rapidly after the extinction event that ended the Cretaceous. The species is regarded as an early member of the lineage leading toward Megalodon and is one of the classic fossil sharks of the Moroccan phosphate deposits.

Its teeth are readily distinguished by their triangular crowns and generally smooth cutting margins, with some examples retaining lateral cusplets beside the main crown. Large individuals were formidable predators, and published estimates have placed them at around 9–10 metres in length.

The Oulad Abdoun Basin near Khouribga is especially famous among fossil collectors because its phosphate deposits contain abundant remains of ancient marine vertebrates, including Otodus teeth.
