This impressive pyrite in matrix from Navajún features two dominant, mirror-bright cubic crystals with exceptionally sharp edges and clean, reflective faces, beautifully elevated above a soft marl matrix. The composition is enhanced by three smaller intergrown cubes subtly emerging from the host rock, adding depth and complexity that collectors appreciate. The larger cubes display excellent form and lustre, with minor natural surface textures that confirm authenticity without detracting from their visual impact. The world-famous pyrite crystals from Navajún formed approximately 130 million years ago within soft, grey Cretaceous marls—fine-grained sedimentary rocks rich in iron. During this time, sulfur-rich fluids moved through the sediments and reacted with the iron present, forming iron sulfide (FeS₂), known as pyrite.

Unlike many pyrite deposits that form in veins or massive ore bodies, these crystals developed directly within the soft marl layers. The stable, low-pressure environment allowed the crystals to grow slowly and undisturbed, rather than being compressed or distorted by surrounding geological forces.

Pyrite naturally crystallises in the cubic (isometric) crystal system, meaning its internal atomic structure favours symmetrical cube shapes. However, what makes Navajún specimens exceptional is the extraordinary precision of these cubes.

The soft surrounding rock provided space for uninterrupted growth, while consistent chemical conditions ensured a steady supply of iron and sulfur. With minimal tectonic disturbance and slow crystallisation over time, the crystals were able to develop sharp edges, flat faces, and a striking metallic lustre. This combination of factors results in cubes so perfect they often appear man-made—yet they are entirely natural.

The Navajún deposit is regarded as one of the most important pyrite localities in the world. It consistently produces some of the finest cubic pyrite specimens known, with exceptional clarity, symmetry, and size.

For mineral collectors, it serves as a benchmark locality—often used to represent the ideal form of pyrite.
