The Beauty of Okorusu Fluorite

Okorusu Mine is one of Namibia's best-known sources of fluorite and is particularly recognised for its attractive blue-green and sea-green cubic crystals. The fluorite formed within a complex alkaline igneous and carbonatite-related geological environment, where mineral-rich fluids created cavities and replaced earlier minerals.

This specimen displays the classic cubic habit of fluorite particularly well. Rather than being dominated by a single isolated crystal, it presents a densely developed cluster of intergrown crystals, creating a layered three-dimensional surface with numerous crystal faces catching the light.

A Closer Look

The pale green fluorite varies in translucency across the specimen, allowing some crystals to appear almost glass-like while others reveal cloudy internal textures and subtle colour variation. Small areas of purple-toned fluorite add further visual interest among the predominantly green crystals.

The darker brown and grey matrix provides an effective natural contrast to the lighter fluorite. Small white associated minerals occur between and across some of the crystals, adding another layer of texture and making individual fluorite cubes easier to distinguish.

Fluorite is a relatively soft mineral, measuring approximately 4 on the Mohs hardness scale, and has perfect octahedral cleavage. Care should therefore be taken when handling or transporting fluorite specimens, particularly clusters with exposed crystal edges.
