A Piece of an Ancient Forest Turned to Stone

Age: Late Triassic Period, approximately 220 million years ago
Location: Ambilobe Region, Northern Madagascar
Polished Face Size / Height: 55mm x 54mm x 32mm (approximately)
Weight: 145 gram
This striking small petrified wood branch from Ambilobe, Madagascar is a beautiful example of nature’s ability to preserve life in extraordinary detail. One end of the branch has been carefully polished, revealing the original internal structure of the tree — including subtle growth patterns, mineral veins, and rich earthy tones created during fossilisation. The outer surface remains natural and textured, still embedded in the original surrounding matrix, offering a wonderful contrast between raw geological history and polished prehistoric beauty.
This fossil was discovered in the Ambilobe region of northern Madagascar, an area famous for its exceptionally preserved petrified forests. Millions of years ago, ancient trees were rapidly buried by sediment, protecting them from decay. Over time, mineral-rich groundwater slowly replaced the organic wood cell by cell, most commonly with silica, transforming the tree into stone while preserving its microscopic structure. The fossil now rests within hardened sedimentary rock — the same material that once encased and protected the buried wood during fossilisation.
Petrified wood like this is incredibly important in the fossil record because it provides direct evidence of prehistoric forests, ancient climates, and plant evolution. Each specimen offers scientists valuable insight into ecosystems that existed long before modern landscapes formed.
