Megacerops belonged to the extinct family Brontotheriidae, commonly known as titanotheres. They were distant relatives of modern horses, tapirs, and rhinoceroses, yet developed their own distinctive appearance. Adult Megacerops could grow to the size of a rhinoceros and are best known for the unusual paired, forked horns on their snouts — bony structures likely used for display or combat between rivals. These remarkable animals eventually disappeared around 34 million years ago, when global climate changes dramatically altered their environment.
