Fossil Remnant of the Thunder Beasts — Megacerops Bone

Species: Brontotherium (Titanothere)
Age: Eocene (54 million – 34 million years ago)
Location: South Dakota, USA
Formation: Chadron Formation – White River Badlands
Size: Approximately 35mm × 19mm × 107mm
Weight: 134 gram
This authentic fossil bone fragment comes from Megacerops, a massive prehistoric mammal once known as Brontotherium, meaning “Thunder Beast.” Although this specimen represents part of an unidentified bone, its fossilised texture and preserved surface detail clearly reveal the mineralised structure typical of large prehistoric mammal bone. The natural contours and dense internal structure give this piece a striking presence, offering a tangible connection to one of the giants of the Eocene world.
Megacerops belonged to the extinct family Brontotheriidae, commonly known as titanotheres. These enormous plant-eating mammals lived across North America during the Eocene Epoch, roughly 54 to 34 million years ago. They were distant relatives of modern horses, tapirs, and rhinoceroses, yet developed their own distinctive appearance. Adult Megacerops could grow to the size of a rhinoceros and are best known for the unusual paired, forked horns on their snouts — bony structures likely used for display or combat between rivals. These remarkable animals eventually disappeared around 34 million years ago, when global climate changes dramatically altered their environment.

This fossil was discovered in the renowned White River Badlands, one of the most important fossil localities in North America. For over a century, fossils from this region have helped scientists piece together the story of mammal evolution after the extinction of the dinosaurs. The sedimentary layers of the White River Badlands preserve an extraordinary record of ancient ecosystems, making it one of the most scientifically significant fossil sites in the world.
Even as a fragment from a larger bone, this specimen represents a genuine piece of deep time — a relic from an era when giant mammals roamed ancient landscapes.
Add this authentic Megacerops fossil to your collection and hold a real fragment of North America’s prehistoric past.
