This Woolly Mammoth Tusk Fossil is a distinctive, compact section of ancient mammoth tusk recovered from a gravel bar in the Tanana River Valley, Alaska. Measuring approximately 53mm in length, this substantial little fragment displays a rich combination of warm brown, tan and darker mineralised tones, with pronounced longitudinal textures across its naturally weathered surface.
The specimen has a rugged, block-like form with visible layers and fibrous structures running through the fossilised tusk material. Darker mineralisation creates attractive contrast across the surface, while the exposed cross-sectional areas provide an interesting view into the internal structure of the ancient tusk. Natural fractures, surface irregularities and variations in colour further emphasise its authentic fossil character.

The Woolly Mammoth was an iconic inhabitant of the Pleistocene landscapes of northern North America. Its tusks were continuously growing modified incisor teeth, used for purposes including moving snow, accessing vegetation and interacting with their environment. Fossilised tusk fragments provide a tangible connection to these remarkable Ice Age giants and the ancient Alaskan landscapes they inhabited.
With its compact size, strong natural texture and earthy mineralised colouring, this Mammoth Tusk is an appealing specimen for collectors of Ice Age fossils, prehistoric mammals and Alaskan fossil material. Its individuality comes from the natural preservation and mineralisation that occurred during its long burial.
A Remarkable Piece of Ice Age History
This Alaska Fossil preserves a small but fascinating section of a mammoth tusk that survived thousands of years of burial and geological change. The contrasting brown tones, layered texture and naturally weathered surfaces make it a characterful addition to a fossil collection.
A beautifully textured mammoth tusk fragment with authentic natural mineralisation — an accessible and fascinating piece of Alaska's Ice Age history for any fossil collector.
