This authentic Woolly Mammoth tusk fragment was recovered from a gravel bar in the Tanana River Valley, Alaska. The specimen has a striking warm brown and tan colour, with a heavily weathered outer surface, naturally fractured edges and areas where the lighter inner tusk material is exposed. Its compact form preserves the layered structure and character of an ancient mammoth tusk.

The Woolly Mammoth

The Woolly Mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) was a cold-adapted relative of modern elephants that lived across the northern regions of Eurasia and North America during the Pleistocene. It had a thick coat, insulating body fat and large tusks that were used for feeding, defence and other daily activities.

Alaska was part of Beringia, a vast Ice Age region connecting Alaska and Siberia. Its cold, dry grasslands provided an ideal habitat for mammoths and other large Ice Age animals.

As the Ice Age ended, changing climate and vegetation reduced the mammoth's habitat. Hunting by humans may also have contributed to their decline. Most Woolly Mammoths disappeared around 10,000 years ago, although small isolated populations survived for several thousand more years.

Why Are Mammoth Tusks Often Broken and Split?

Mammoth tusks were buried for thousands of years and subjected to pressure, moisture, mineral changes and repeated freezing and thawing. These conditions can create cracks and weaknesses within the dentine.

Once exposed by erosion, Alaskan rivers can carry the remains through gravel deposits, where movement and contact with rocks can cause already-fractured tusks to break into smaller pieces. The irregular fractures and weathered surfaces seen on this specimen are therefore part of its natural history.
